NGC 2787

When a star dies, it collapses to a single point and then explodes. Emitting a supernova. Black holes form in the aftermath of these supernovas, at the center of the blast where gravity is strongest. The largest of these black holes often draw astronomical debris to themselves, usually in the form of free floating clouds of gas or dust. Over time, this debris combines to form stars, and eventually, star systems.

The massive amount of gravity at the center of a black hole, means that nothing escapes the pull. Black holes swallow everything in their immediate reach. From planets, to stars, to ships, even light itself. Sometimes, this debris can form into a pattern called an accretion disc. A superheated halo of matter that spins around the black hole, just outside its pull, before ultimately being consumed.

On rare occasions, this spinning material will build up magnetic energy in the form of a powerful vortex that fires outward from the black hole like a giant death ray. These rays are often multiple light years in size, and can shoot outward in any direction, at any time. These rays are known for blasting holes through distant nebulas, and providing the jolt of energy required to birth stars.

Technically speaking, the Supermassive Black Hole at the Center of the Velorum galaxy is called NGC 2787. But anyone who’s actually seen it, will respectfully call it simply “The Void.” Given its massive size, NGC 2787 rarely contains an accretion disc, with any possible debris within reach having been swallowed up eons ago. This does not, however, mean that the area is empty. On the contrary, most of the densest and most valuable materials can only be acquired from this spot. Usually by a method called “Sending.”

Popularized by Captain Jade Bootroot, this method involves intentionally pushing debris into the orbit of NGC 2787, allowing the debris to compress and purify, and then catching or Extracting that debris before it is consumed by The Void.
